Angry AUTO PROBLEMS

Have a problem with my box in 2nd gear it seems to slip... I have had my car since april-may and havent serviced the box. How often should i do it? And should i flush the oil and put new oil in it? If so wat oil is best to use? Is it a big job?

Before you do anything, check the fluid level with the engine warm and the transmission in park (the trans' dipstick is near the firewall just to the driver's side of the back of the engine).

Changing the fluid (and filter) is easy, but can be a bit messy because there is no drain plug. You just have to try to get the fluid to spill out from one corner of the pan as you remove it. Refilling is easy too, you can simply put a funnel on the end of the trans' dipstick tube and pour it in from there.

As for what auto fluid to use, just read the label and ensure that it lists the Ford four speed as one of the suitable transmissions (don't just get normal Dextron II or III, they won't suit it). All automotive stockists will have something suitable.

Sam i took the EB to ALs Race Glides at Padstow yesterday and asked whats the problem about 2nd gear slipping and can it be fixed. The guy said the box needs a rebuild, i then asked about a box being built for 300-350rwhp. He replied with, a fully manulised reverse pattern fully rebuilt with bigger stally but depending on cam size what stally he will fit to suit. about $1800. If i went C4 start from about $3000+. Thinking of just getting another 2nd hand box for now. Car has done about 220k is this normal for the box to go at this time...

Things do wear out. Depends on how well it's been serviced and how it's been driven. If it always had lots of fresh fluid, never overheated and had a standard engine in front of it you'd probably get 500,000km or more out of one, but that scenario never happens. All it would take is for the fluid to be low and the temp to get right up there (towing, burnout, other abuse) and the service life will be drastically reduced.

I'm not so sure you'd need a fully manualised BTR or a built C4 for 300-350rwhp in a street-driven car. All you'd need is a standard BTR in really good nick, fully synthetic fluid and a big trans cooler. If you're going racing or plan to do burnouts, then you'd look at an upgrade.

If it's buggered it's buggered. Your idea of getting another (used) BTR (must be from a 5L) and sticking it in there sounds like the go. Just be conscious of the fact that a used trans will have an unknown amount of life left in it (depends on how cheap you get it and whether you can be bothered changing it more than once I suppose). Oh, and just an incidental, the EB/D four-speeds have a dipstick and externally adjusted bands, but the EF-onwards has no dipstick (makes refilling a PITA) and internally adjusted bands. EB1 was also prone to leaking at the rear seal so change that if you get one and it hasn't been replaced already.

In regards to the band being adjustable the guy at that Als Race Glides said that the box cant be adjusted...??? Its seems like its slipping more now the box and have to do something pretty quick. Can an AU BTR box fit ? Herd that an early model AU was put into a EB, it was six though. Something about something being on the same side for it to work only belhousing swap to fit. But that series 2 and 3 AU boxes dont fit cause that somthing is on the other side. Makes sense??? Can the same be done with a 5L box from an early AU???? OR do i only have choice between EA - EL????

Is it expensive to take out the 4 speed BTR and put a C4 in it??? Is it a big do it yourself job? Anyone done this before? Or can anyone help my with another BTR 4 speed?

C4 will be a bit of mucking around. The ECU will need the strategy (chip) of a manual (zero torque truncation), and the tailshaft will be different. You'll probably need a 164tooth flexplate instead of the 157tooth effort that's in there standard, but it will need a 50oz counterweight, not the old-school 20oz. The starter (with an old-school bellhousing) will be on the other side. Make a new trans crossmember to bolt it in place, add a kickdown cable and modify the shifter surround...

Your main options are the auto from an EB-EL 5L. The BTR from an AU 5L would be less mucking around than the C4, but I'm not sure if the length is the same or slightly longer.

As for how to do the replacement yourself, this thread should cover it;

Spoke to guy in queensland who owned a transmission place not sure what it was called but i got the number from the trading post, he had all the time in the world to speak to me and it didnt bother him which is hard to get advice these days... He had told me that the AU V8 BTR fits straight into the EB with no hassle. Was told that the AU BTR has adaptive shift but the wiring plugs straight in too... Just stuffed up on a chance on getting an AU XR8 BTR with 87k on it with seals done for about 400 and im spewing big time... Anywhere i can get any BTR auto?
