Hi as fordman. We saw your XY and met you at the Nizpro national dyno day. That clevo of yours definitely has some grunt.

The amount of horsepower you can get before splitting a block is kind of like asking how long is a piece of string. There are many factors that will determine the limit, not least of which is the quality of the casting in the block in question. The next thing is how you are making that power. The stock 5.0L roller cam Windsor has a reputation for splitting blocks more than Clevelands do, but that’s mainly in forced induction combinations.

The Sierra RS 500 Cosworth YBD block wasn’t immune either, but this next example points to another reason. Halfway through Bathurst in 1988, Greg Hansford was leading the race in an Allan Moffat ANZ Sierra when the pacecar came out for an unusually long five laps or so. The pacecar finally came in and then, a very short time later under full power, the block split in half, race over. When they looked at the telemetry, they discovered that while tootling along behind the pace car the temperature had dropped to around half the normal race temp. The sudden stress of full boost and associated full heat on a cold motor was determined to be the cause. I think you’ll find that the circumstances (ie temperature changes) are surprisingly similar on most Ford V8 stock block failures, Cleveland or Windsor, when they go from cold to hot in a short space of time at the drag strip. The rapid (and uneven) expansion and twisting forces combine to break the block.

As for how much power you will make on pump 98, how many revs are you willing to turn the engine to, how much torque are you willing to sacrifice and how deep are your pockets? I’d like to see a 393 crack 700hp on pump gas without the bottle, but you’re looking at a sonic tested block, sheet metal manifold, roller cam and not much under 8000rpm. Not exactly the kind of motor you could live with everyday.

Running the NOS just means you have to stay absolutely on top of your air:fuel ratios. If it ever goes lean you will be handed the perfect opportunity to start again. You also have to concern yourself with the quality of the fuel that you pump into it. If you suspect you’ve got a dud batch, drain it. Don’t even consider full throttle, much less even looking at the NOS switch.

It depends on a lot of things.

We started with a untouched block ie hadnt been bored out, then we grout filled to the welsh plugs, and diesel sleeved it.

If you go boring these blocks, you are asking for trouble imho. These blocks are famous for splitting bores, so why take away some of the meat of the bore? If you want more cubes, stroke it.

My current combo is fed 12psi, and has made 589hp at the treads at only 5000rpm.

590.049719 hp to be exact!

Google is a good thing.
Type in:
440 kilowatts in horsepower.

It'll do all sorts of conversions, but you need to get the wording right.
